Why the Snowflake Test is a Big, Big Hiring Mistake (and What to Do Instead)
Why the Snowflake Test is a Big, Big Hiring Mistake (and What to Do Instead) While attending or even organizing at least several job interviews, you must have noticed that in almost every group there is that one person which is so over the top that it can be a bit annoying.A person who is so overconfident and high in the sky that you just want to slap them and tell them to get out.Of course, that wouldnât be appropriate to do, since you have to be polite to everyone, but there is something you could do.CEO of The Silent Partner Marketing, Kyle Reyes, designed a specific test for the interviewers, which they could use to rule out the people who have the previously mentioned characteristics. That test is called âSnowflake Testâ and it will be our topic for today. We will explain what âSnowflake Testâ is, when and why people use it, why it shouldnât be used and what can you do instead of it.If you want to learn more, bear with us and let us begin!WHAT IS âSNOWFLAKE TESTâ?âSnowflake testâ was designed by Kyle Reyes, the CEO of the Silent Partner Marketing with a goal to help interviewers to recognize self-righteous and overconfident people, who think they are unique and better than other people. Why there is even a need to recognize this kind of people? Those people tend to be very sensitive about themselves and only care about their own thoughts and wishes, which is, of course not good for the company. They rarely listen to what other people have to say and they think they are always right, which means that in their brain, all the ideas that other people suggest are a complete load of crap. Now, you can imagine why employers wouldnât want this kind of people to work for them. Modern business is all about teamwork. Most of the things have to be done in teams, by working with other people.Even if your job is not based around the team, you still have to communicate with other sectors and higher-ups.So, having people who do not value other peopleâs opinion at all would probably just hurt the company, especially if they would m anage to get to some higher position, from where they could use even more of their âpowerâ against other employees. That is something which you, as a leader, cannot allow to happen, because it would create a very negative atmosphere amongst other employees. And when people are not satisfied, they are less productive, which would all reflect on profit levels.âSnowflake testâ contains some very intriguing questions, to say at least, so letâs examine some of them and see why this test has caused this much controversy. The Most Common QuestionsHow do you feel about guns? What are your feelings about employees or clients carrying guns? How do you feel about the police? When was the last time you cried and why?Whatâs your favorite kind of adult beverage?Whatâs your typical breakfast? How do you handle bullies?Youâre in Starbucks with two friends. Someone runs in and says someone is coming in with a gun in 15 seconds to shoot patrons. They offer you a gun. Do you take it? What do you do next? What does faith mean to you?Whatâs more important? Book smarts or street smarts? Explain your answer. These are just some of the most intriguing questions this test has to offer. Some of these questions are pretty crazy, right?Well, by analyzing the answer to these questions, you can tell what kind of person sits in front of you and decided whether it is fit to work for you or not.In theory, this would help you find suitable people to do the job you need them to do, people who would be able to work in teams and resolve problems together with their coworkers. But is that really the case or we are missing something here?Letâs find out in the next part of the text. As for you, who would like to hear more about âSnowflake testâ check the video below where Kyle Reyes, the man himself, explains why he designed this test in the first place. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS OF âSNOWFLAKE TESTâ?âSomething is rotten in the state of Denmark.â â" William ShakespeareAs a wise man above has said, there is something really fishy about âSnowflake testâ.Yes, it might seem that in theory it should work perfectly and root out overconfident and annoying people, but it also has some additional problems as well, so not everything is as shiny as it might seem.1. Political Beliefs are not a CultureLisa Dawsey Smith, who is the president of the board of directors at Downtown Whitewater Inc. says that this type of questions does not help with finding out the right people for the job, but instead they help you find the people who have the same opinion as you do.And we all know that a successful entrepreneur should try to find people whose personal skills differentiate from himself because it is important to find the people that complete you, whose strengths are your weaknesses and vice versa. And not just that, but by having the people around you who just think the same as you do is not a healthy environment, because same political beliefs should not become a culture. If you would just listen to the people who already think the same as yourself, you wouldnât be able to broaden your mind and open it for new and different opinions that might prove to be better than your own.And that is something which shouldnât be done, because constant innovation and thinking out of a box are very important for every business, especially for those who strive to be the best of the best among the sea of competitors.2. It is Dangerous to Hire People from the Same GroupOne very specific problem, closely related to the previous one is that âSnowflake testâ could lead to hiring the same type of person over and over again because as previously said, it is important to have different mindsets in the team.Imagine the situation that you have applied this test and employ several people, making them all be the same team. They would all be very communicative, hard-working and eager to do their work as efficiently as possible. Now, letâs imagine that they have to solve some problem with a group of clients.People of different characters sometimes find it hard to reach an agreement, and it is very unlikely that all clients would have the same mindset as our negotiators. That could lead to them not reaching the agreement or not being able to solve the issue at hand because no one could think of anything different. It is always better to have a diverse team, which is able to solve any issue, by utilizing everyoneâs skills and figuring out what would be the best course of action.Sometimes you just need people who are able to slow down, think carefully about the problem and find the solution to every issue you might have.3. People Who are Looking for Jobs Often LieA very common issue with not just âSnowflake testâ, but with all the interviews in general, is that you can never know for sure if the person who is interviewed is telling the truth or not.People tend to lie during their job interviews, in order to increase their chances to get the job.The y lie about all kind of stuff, starting from their personal skills written in the CV to telling completely false stories that might interest the person who is conducting the interview. This is a very widespread problem, and some people manage to get away with it, some donât, it all depends on how they react on their job. If they lied just to get the job and then really learned all the skills they claimed to have during the interview, then it can be considered as a positive lie, which motivated them to learn even harder.Of course, if that is not the case, then the company would get a very bad person, who is not able to perform basic tasks because not having the right set of skills for it and because of them not being willing to learn. Now, this also concerns the âSnowflake testâ as well.People usually prepare themselves for the interview, so they might even learn all of these questions by heart in order to impress the interviewer. And then they get the job because they were prepar ed, they knew the answers to most of the questions, but when they start working, they show who they really are and that is when employers could notice that they made a terrible mistake.4. âSnowflake Testâ is Built on FearEveryone knows that if people are motivated enough, they will do their job much more efficiently and with much greater enjoyment. That is why the employer should find proactive employees and try to motivate them to work harder. But, that is the catch with âSnowflake testâ.By using it, employers basically send the message to their employees that they are not valued at all if they donât have a certain mindset if they donât have the certain type of behavior that employers try to find in the test answers. That would not just discourage them from joining the company, but also from sharing some of their personal ideas they might have, and some of which could benefit the company as a whole if implemented. And since they would think lesser of themselves, they would keep their thoughts to themselves, which would be a very big waste, since we all know that new ideas are fuel for innovations, and innovations are crucial for the advancement of every company. So, instead of doing this and degrading their employees, employers should try to motivate them and create kind of working environment in which people would be highly encouraged to think of new improved ways of doing business, which would make everyone happier, especially the higher-ups when the money starts flowing in.5. The Test Doesnât Evaluate PerformanceAnother problem with the âSnowflake testâ is that it ignores certain aspects of the hiring process, such as the research if the person is fit to do that specific job or not.All that this test does is group the people with the same personality traits, who may or may not be lying about themselves, without any focus on other things that matter. As Kris Boesch, founder and CEO of Choose People have said, this test does not help you find the competent individuals who are capable of doing their job on their own if needed.Instead, it helps you find competent followers who would do your bidding without any thought and without any contribution to new ideas. This doesnât represent the healthy working environment, because people wouldnât be able to advance and broaden their minds and be able to think of some very useful ideas. In this kind of environment, people would just get dull and some of them might not even be competent enough for the job they applied for, but since they have managed to answer the questions, they got accepted. That could reflect a really bad image of the company, not just inside of it, but also, amongst the competitors as well, which can be seen in many areas of business.WHAT TO DO INSTEAD OF THE âSNOWFLAKE TESTâ?Now that we saw what are the main problems regarding the âSnowflake testâ, let us examine what we can do differently and how to do it in order to find the perfect candidates for the j ob.1. Spend Time with Your CandidatesOne of the biggest issues when it comes to the interviews is that people can simply lie about themselves, about who they are, what their interests and skills are, so employers often get the wrong picture about the person who is in front of them. But, what could be done about that? How could we really meet our potential employees?Letâs find out!One of the not so common methods is that you conduct your interview in a not so formal way, so you could get a notion of who the person in front of you really is.For example, my close friend had her first interview in a shopping mall. The person who interviewed her took her to the mall and they did some shopping, talk to one another and managed to get a bit of a sense of who the person next to them really is.Another thing, this one is much more common, is that if you have already hired that person, you should organize some teambuilding trips, little games or simply find some activity to do together with you r team. That way, you will be able to meet those people and see if they are really who they claim to be and if they really fit in the position you took them for.2. Find the Problem SolversNow, instead of focusing on peopleâs personality during interviews, you could try to add some questions about some practical situations, in which anyone could find themselves in while doing their job. That would show you if the person is able to think outside of the box, which would tell you whether the person could handle some difficult situations that might happen. That way, you could group that kind of people and really make a really good team, who would be able to solve most of the practical issues it may stumble upon during every-day work. Also, make sure not just to look for people with similar characteristics and skills. As already mentioned, that is one of the biggest faults of âSnowflake testâ, so remember not to repeat it.You should try to make the team out of people with different perso nalities, but who are able to work together very well. That way, they would complete each other and be able to deal with most of the problems they encounter, because each of them would be good at something, and mixed with everyoneâs abilities, it would create a team which could think outside the box and easily finds the best possible solution.3. Offer Trial PeriodAnother great thing you could do in order to meet your potential employees is to offer them a trial period in which they would be accepted for the job, but in order to stay longer, they would need to prove themselves that they are able to do the job they applied for. This is a very common practice when it comes to hiring fresh graduates or even students who still have to finish their studies. That helps them learn the job, get some experience and prepare themselves for their future careers. That way they are able to try out a couple of jobs if they are lucky to be selected and choose one field that suits them the most.Of cour se, if people turn out to be very useful and hard-working, you should recognize that and reward them with something, doesnât need to be something expensive or similar, just a small bonus or even new, improved contract. That way, they would feel much more motivated to work, which would increase their productivity and help the company achieve their goals much faster than if employers were less productive.4. Focus on Emotional IntelligenceWe have mentioned teamwork for a couple of times during this presentation, but we have never said how it really works. In order for a team to be successful, people need to get along and work together well. It is not that easy to achieve, especially in big companies with a lot of people, where team members could change very fast.It is a very hard job for the leaders to find the right people, who would be able to work together and resolve any issues they might have without much trouble. So, in order to do that, you must set the right example, listen to o ther peopleâs opinions, and understand their fears and emotions. If you, as team leader, can do it, then your employees will see that they can do it as well and, that is the atmosphere you have to make for everyone in the company, so they would feel important.Motivation and personal encouragement are very important in this regard, so try to motivate your workers, because if they are motivated and happy, they would work much better and with more energy.Listen to Brian Tracy on the topic of how you can motivate and inspire your employers, and you will get a bit more insight into what we have said. 5. Choose the Character Fit for the JobThe last important thing about conducting an interview is that you should try to find the person whose character would fit the position or the job they apply for.In order to determine their character, you should ask some questions about themselves, their hobbies and skills, why they think they would be good for this position and similar. That way, you s hould be able to determine if the person is right for the job or not.Of course, it could happen that people lie about that, but you could still get an overview of their characters, which would be enough for you to decide. What could help you in this regard are several simple softwares, like Caliper, which you could use to analyze certain skills and attributes and check if they match the ones needed for the job you offer.FINAL WORDThat was it about what âSnowflake testâ is and why it is not a good tool to use during interviews. We have seen that it has many problems, which could easily be solved by simply using a different kind of questions and applying certain activities that may improve relations between both employees and employers.

Advertising to Children Advertising is a multibillion dollar industry. It is in every facet of our lives; from billboards to smartphones. Over the years children and adolescents have become the primary target for marketers; mostly because advertisers realize that they have a profound influence on what parents buy. The invasion of age specific advertising can undeniably be attributed to this movement. However, researchers and parents are starting to speak up against the negative effects and consequences this imposes on children. When we see other people that have different race, different culture on the streets we get a good feeling. A felling of being different but it is yet important. We get to know their feeling and they get to know ours. We try to help them recover from their past and they try to help us understand how they suffered among million of other people. We should live together in peace and respect one anther. Respect ours own culture and their culture. We have strong power when individuals unite work together. Diversity is what makes our country unique; diversity in the United States has brought not only people together but has also brought a world of ideas, beliefs, and cultures. With diverse ideas, we can get engaged in a dialogue with many view points and come up with solutions for solving problems across the world. Diversity is not our challenge but it is our blessing. It is the most wonderful thing in America. We have a change to learn good things about other culture and apply them to ours real life. And we also have an opportunity to exchange ours culture to them. Recently, for an example, there are many Non Americanââ¬â¢s restaurants opened to serve in the area. It would be so boring if we just eat only American foods all the time. There are Chinese, Thai, Italian, Japanese restaurant in this country so you can taste and eat your favorite foods without traveling internationally to other country. If there was no diversity, we would be trapped on stupidity and selfishness. We need to open up ours country, ours hearts in order to do ours exploration and exchanging our culture to all country around the world. Diversity is the essence of evolution. Right from the ancient times, it has been clearly evident that various races of the world interacted and traded with each other. Calling diversity as one of the leading survival tactics of the human race wonââ¬â¢t be an anomaly. ââ¬Å"A lot of people in our industry havenââ¬â¢t had very diverse experiences. So they donââ¬â¢t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader oneââ¬â¢s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have. â⬠ââ¬âSteve Jobs. Albert Court Motor Lodge
Albert Court Motor Lodge Abstract This report looks into the concepts that should be applied in the management of Albert Court Motor Lodge. This follows the evaluation that was conducted on the performance of the motel. The report gives some recommendations that can be done to make sure that the management and the performance of the motel meet international standards. Some of the concepts recommended are concerned with the location, marketing and the specialization in the services offered.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Albert Court Motor Lodge specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Introduction In this paper, I will look into a hotel which is within the vicinity in town. I will research into the hotels location, operation, management, marketing and specifications. To achieve this there are concepts that are concerned with the management of a hotel such as human resource management, empowerment of the workers and international management of the hotels (Powers, 1995, p. 174). The other concepts to watch are the yields that the hotel gains from the combination of all other concepts. For my project I will look into a motel situated in Hamilton.à The name of the motel is Albert Court Motor Lodge. The motel is owned and operated by Kathryn David Gillingham. In addition, the motel was started in February 2010 meaning that the motel is only one year old. In order to manage the needs of individuals, couples and families who are different they have introduced lodge regulation to take sports team to engage families. Background information The motel is as mentioned above; it is called Albert Court Motor Lodge. It is located in Hamilton city, New Zealand. The location of this business is attractive for residency either for people staying for short period or long term. Some of the scenes are short walking distances to the river and there is a beautiful park next to it. It is located in Hamilton East suburb where there are Hamilton e ast shops. The area is very quiet and adequate for relaxation. In addition, it is very close to the Hamilton CBD. So, it is convenient location for people looking to spend weekends or holidays in Hamilton.à On the view of the marketing strategies it shall be concerned with the target that the motel has in the market. The motel targets travelers who require quality accommodation during the week, and particularly key local national businesses. For instance, Waikato University couples who require executive accommodation to stay for weekends or public holidays will consider staying in the motel.à In addition, the lodge has a Website which provides key information and attitude environment to suit primary target. Furthermore, it has a Channel manager enabling bookings to be made via a number of key websites e.g. Wotif, AA and Jasons.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? It is indicted that other than being a lodge, customers can also enjoy the motels luxurious facilities. The motel has apartments that are of style liable to offer comfort and relaxation to its customers. There are a number of selections that a customer can choose from; there are spacious rooms that vary according to the number of rooms that are needed by the customers. Customers can be able to choose from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom units depending on the customersââ¬â¢ preference. What I observed is that the motel has close to 18 units that are kitchenette and are furnished with two hotplates, microwaves, toaster, pots and pans. In addition, the units are technology compliant since they are fitted with internet access ports that will be of h elp to customers who are after business information. They are fitted with wireless network and broadband that is accessible everywhere in the motel. Other facilities offered to keep costumers entertained; they are able to watch sky channels in Wall-mounted 32 LCD TVs and Stereo system with iPod docking. To add convenience to the facilities, they are fitted with air conditioning systems. This will make the rooms more convenient to hold meetings and it will also reduce cases of rooms heating up too much during a hot season. The bathrooms are fitted with efficient facilities that ensure that the customers feel and enjoy the servicers. The bathrooms are large nonslip tile ensuite bathrooms with impressive shower, make-up lights and hairdryer are also provided; and some units have spa bath and/or private courtyard. In addition, some of the executive rooms are fitted with either super-size, super queen-size or supper single beds which are of high quality. Methodology To carry out the rese arch I intend to use observation method. In this case, I will have to go personally to the motel and conduct a physical evaluation. However, there is some information that I will not be able to get from observations only meaning, that I will have to carry out interviews with the management of the motel. There will be a need to interview some of the workers and some customers to comment on the management of the motel and the services offered respectively. After collecting all the information needed, I will need to compile the information and come up with a comprehensive report about the management of the motel.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Albert Court Motor Lodge specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Challenges Some of the challenges that I look forward to encounter are being denied access to the facility and carrying out my research on it. In addition, there is a challenge on obtaining information from customers or the workers at the motel. Also, getting some of the information that may be classified with the organization might be an uphill task since the management might be reluctant in releasing it to me. To overcome some of the challenges it will be important that I obtain necessary authorization from the management. Another thing that can be done to make the process smooth is by making sure that I assure the management that all information that I will obtain from the motel will be used only for my thesis and will be treated with high confidence. In addition, I will make sure that I have created a rapport with the workers before I embark on interviewing them in order to get genuine information to keep me running and find appropriate results. The report will help relate the theoretical aspects learnt in class. After the project, I will be in a position to offer adequate advice to the management in places that I will discover that they are going short of information. The project will also hel p me upgrade the necessary facilities that are of help to me and the management. Project Report From the research that was conducted on a motel by the name of Albert Court Motor Lodge, it was observed that there are places in the management of the motel that require changes so as to attain the desired changes in the management of the facility. The results also indicate that with adequate concepts put in place, it is possible to maximize utilization of the motel according to its position and how it is being managed. The concept applied in the management mostly refers to the size of the market as well as the size of the motel. It is also related to the position of the motel and also according to the marketing strategies that have been put in place. The results also indicated that there is a need to watch the performance of the workforce that should be done under the watch of the human resource management. I will put across recommendations that needs be applied to the human resource ma nagement team to come up with the needed strategies in management. Marketing It is evident that hotels are involved with services; the services rendered to their customers are intangible. The other characteristics of the services rendered to the customers are that they are perishable, variable and are inseparable (Booms Bitner, 1981, p. 47). Developments observed in the world are in most cases shifting towards services industry. This makes motels and hotels a viable investment in the world to day (Booms Bitner, 1981, p. 47). The shift in the needs of the economy is as a result of there being a lot of disposable income among the society which has brought about the fact that there are more needs for leisure and recreation services (Booms Bitner, 1981, p. 47). The changes indicated are also applicable in China where the economy is registering an increase in time needed to relax and the best place to do so is at the hotels or motels (Booms Bitner, 1981, p. 47).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Despite the fact that there is an increasing need for services, there is also a need to understand the types of products that our motel is dealing with. To attain the intended market size and the needed influence of the market, there is a need to consider aspects of market mix. There is a need to consider; the products, price, promotion and the place (Brien Jeannie, 1993, p. 130). Albert Court Motor Lodge should focus on the product it offers to the customers. Meaning, it should be sure that the services are what is needed by the customers. However, the evaluation of the products that are the services; it is hard to determine the complexity of the products. For a service industry, it will add other three Ps to make them to 7Ps of market management (Jagels Coltman, 2004, p. 232). The concepts to be considered are the participants, physical evidence and the process. Therefore, our company should be very careful to look into the approach that it takes to look at the marketing strateg ies. The strategies in most cases are guided by the basic needs of human wants, needs and demand. The needs are concerned about the basic needs of human beings that are shelter, food and clothing (Jagels Coltman, 2004, p. 232). To consider the needs, the company should also consider the cultural diversity of the target market. Wants are things that the market analyst will have decided as the needs for the community while on the other hand; demand is the buying power of the market. The buying power of the market will help us in pricing of our commodities and goods. It is very important that the motel have to understand what the customers are willing to spend in order to get the services being provided (Jagels Coltman, 2004, p. 232). The motel management should appreciate the fact the need to purchase hotel services is contributed by the need or the urge that is as a result of a television commercial (Jagels Coltman, 2004, p. 232). This translates to the fact that Albert Court Moto r Lodge should invest into marketing promotion and exhibitions that will help in advertising their commodities.à It is also important that the motel management gets to know how their customers do select their products (Lawson, 1995, p. 27). It is also important to know why a customer will not choose a bed suit from another motel and select their products. It should be understood that the perception a guest may have on a motel may change suddenly after the experience or by word of mouth from another customer (Lawson, 1995, p. 27). This will mean that the management should not compromise on the quality of services they offer to at all times. It is important that the management will consider adding more facilities and fittings to the rooms to make them more competitive in the market. It is also important that Albert Court Motor Lodge carries out an interactive discussion with the customers to ascertain their needs as they come into the motel. Such interactions will help the managemen t respond to them as they are wants, this makes sure that the motel is always leading in terms of quality services. This is true since most of the customers come from a different background making them the best source of information that is vital to the maintenance of the services integrity (Lewis, 1984, p. 26). In order to best understand the needs of the customers, market segmentation will be advised.à Market segmentation will target the specific needs of the customers in different markets. Albert Court Motor Lodge management should be able to discover all the needs of different customers (Biehal, 1983, p. 83). Since we are involved with housing and motel services we should segment our floors to have different prices and different services in the rooms. The services could range from either colour used in the rooms being different or different services could be fitted in different rooms. Such a diverse nature of rooms should be secured in a manner that will be beneficial to a vas t group of customers that have different tastes and purchasing power (Biehal, 1983, p. 83). In this we shall be able to widen our customer base and at the same time perfect our performance. When segmenting the market, we should be specific on the criteria we use to select the market. Our motel can target only the locals, foreigners or both. This will be concerned about the location of the motel. Targeting only the foreigners will not work for our motel since Hamilton is not a tourist hub. The steps involved in market segmentation takes into consideration the consumption power of the target market (Wearne Marrison, 1996, p. 235). However, the process does not take into consideration the differences in each segment; this will obscure the management from comprehending the best practises of the market. The appropriate methods to market segmentation should be performed via demographic segmentation in terms of age, life stages, income and gender. It is important to get the statistics of the group of customers that does migrate into the area and the special needs they have that we can serve (Wearne Marrison, 1996, p. 235).à Another concept to be considered under marketing is differentiation of the products; differentiation means that one needs to make his products different from those offered by the competitors (Wearne Marrison, 1996, p. 235). In this regard, we perceive that the demand will be created by the customers. When attending to the differences, it is important that the differences not be attended to the same way. Since the products offered by the hotels are not tangible, the differences will not be in the products directly but they will be in the form of processing the products. It is believed that the differences in the products will create awareness in the mind of the customers (Wearne Marrison, 1996, p. 235). Our motel, being situated in a busy town will be focused on the facilities that are vital to adding the quality to life and the management is very vital to these services. Product differentiation can be achieved with the help of creating a website where the comments of the customers can be posted and responded to according to the needs of the customers. According to Wearne and Marrison indicated that the method is the cheapest (1996, p. 236). The method attracts customers and determines if the customers are long term or only for a short time.à Under marketing it is important that our motel creates an emotional attachment with the customers (Barsky Nash, 2002, p. 40). This is as a result of the fact that customers that are attached emotionally to the hotel are likely to come back again. From the influence of the emotions, it is possible to cause an attachment that will affect the changes in the administration of the hotel (Barsky Nash, 2002, p. 40).à The other field to check under marketing is the relationship between the customers and the management (Lewis, 1984, p. 29). The management should be concerned about cre ating a good customer care since they are the first contact between potential customers and the motel. In addition, room service personnel should be courteous and honest such that they cannot interfere with the customerââ¬â¢s personal effects. The mandate should be left in the hands of the supervisors to ensure that staffs working under their lines are competent and reliable at all times. Despite the fact they are the initial contacts with the company, they are also the images that shows the effective management of a company. When the staffs are not well behaved they will always fail the management. This further indicates that the management of the company has created a communications channel with their employees (Lewis, 1984, p. 30). Location Since we do not wish to change the location of our company, the company will have to make sure that the location of the market is taken care of by the management. When looking at the feasibility of putting up a hotel or motel, the location is very vital and it should be ensured that the management conducts a feasibility study on the location of the facility. It research shows that the location of the motel will dictate the rates of the rooms (Plog, 2001, p. 18). When the rooms are located close to business meeting venues, it will be helpful in the determination of the rates to put across. For our motel, we can consider setting up the rooms at a place that is much far from town; here we shall include meeting points and other facilities that are vital in consideration of the market (Pearce, 1995, p. 217). Such conference halls will attract business meetings that will further consider using our other facilities such as rooms and food. The other change that may be made to the location of the hotel is changing the appearance of the hotel. The strategic positioning of the hotel can change over time and it will depend on the future plans that are meant to help the performance of the hotel (Pearce, 1995, p. 220). It is true t hat the position of the hotel can determine its survival but still, the conception created by the customersââ¬â¢ matters greatly. Albert Court Motor Lodge management should focus on creating a positive conception with the guests. I recommend that the management be very critical in ensuring that guestsââ¬â¢ needs and wants are met; this will be achieved by having a comprehensive relationship with the customers and ensuring that their complains are taken care of. If the hotel is placed at a place that is continuously experiencing shifts in the number guests, the management have to consider either selling the premises to a different investor, this will help in attaining an appropriate price refund, but this should not be an attempt to reshuffle the investment (Pearce, 1995, p. 220). Another aspect under location is the development of the hotel at the same place without moving it to a different place; it should be considered to achieve the intended customersââ¬â¢ confidence. Th e motel management can be able to target a different hotel in the market where the parent motel, Albert Court Motor Lodge will mortgage the land or an existing facility. They can hire and improve the facilities to make it applicable to more customers and serve different needs. In addition, the location of the motel should be guided by social classes of the place (Pearce, 1995, p. 220). The concept can be applied by Albert Court Motor Lodge to determine the best location of the motel depending on the place where it is located and the social classes around the motel. When the motel is designed to attract a certain group of the social class it should be located at a place that it accessible to them easily and in an environment that is reliable to them (Plog, 2001, p. 27).à The other concept to consider in the location of the motel is the employment opportunities it will create to the neighbours. It is important that it is placed at a place that will offer potential positive aspects t o the motel. It should also be known that the setting up of the motel at a place will cause socioeconomic factors of the society. Human Resource Management It is within notice of many that many motels use part-time employment instead of using fulltime employment. The reasons that are contributing to using part-time employment are that the employer will not have long term attachments with the employees (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 34). However, the activity has negative consequences such as; employees employed part-time do not have commitment to the work and they will always come to get their pay and go back. Employing part-time employees will create a turnover effect that is more than employing them on a permanent basis. Due to the lack of commitment to the hotel, there is no adequate communication between the management and the employees. It is also evident all the part-time employees are less concerned about the well being of the hotel (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 34). In the mote l, it is important that the management get involved in ensuring that all the employees are well trained in matters that pertain to showing respect to their place of work as well as the customers.à Research conducted showed that part-time workers in most cases exhibit the critical work attitude and ethic than the full-time workers (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 34). Some of the workers are shown to contribute highly to the welfare at the work place. It should be noted that most of the managers usually look down upon part-time workers since they see as less committed to their work despite the fact that they are always doing the same job as the rest of the workers who are employed full-time (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 34). There is over simplification of the concept that most of the motel employees are not educated. The oversimplification has contributed to the fact most of the customers will always complain that the staffs are not competent and that they do not measure up to have a c onversation with the customers (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 36). To avoid the oversimplification, our motel should be focused on ensuring that it employs trained personnel who are competent with their work. This will also call for training of workers who have stayed in the company for long or who were previously employed in a manner that merit was not considered. The other recommendation I should make to the management is that there should be refresher courses that will make sure that the workers are taught on the need for security and other management problems (Stamper Van Dyne, 2003, p. 34). It is also important that the motel get to tap its manpower from the available trained resources from Hamilton. To ensure that the staffs of the motel have the same training and they respond to issues in a similar manner, there should be common courses that are taught to the workers before they are hired. The other concept to consider is the occupancy of the manpower, it is important to consi der the condition that the workers are living at, despite the fact that such an act will be taken as an intrusion into the private life of the staff (Simons Hinkin, 1992, p. 66). It is very important that the staffs employed are people who are presentable and are concerned about their personal grooming (Simons Hinkin, 1992, p. 66). The other issue that is very common among the workers is the issue of the work week. Most of the employees need to have a rest day within a week. It is always important that the off-day be communicated to the employees before they sign their contract letters (Johnson, 1998, p. 32). This will reduce chances of future disagreements when the employees are being posted according to their duty roster. This should also include the job rotation schedule that it should be done in a manner that it does not oppress the employee (Oliver, 1996, p. 253). It will give them the peace of mind as they work in the motel which will be a perfect means of ensuring that ther e is efficiency in the motel (Jone, 1990, p.147). Empowerment of the Employees The other concept that should be considered in the management of the lodge is the empowerment of the employees to make them feel important to the company this also will make them more responsible (Brymer, 1991, p. 60). The motel should adopt the process of decentralization of decision making; ideas should be contributed by all the workers and every stakeholder in the management of the motel (Hales Klidas, 1998, p. 88). I also advise that the workers in the motel be allowed to create groups that will be representing them to the managerial committees. (Prado, 2001, p. 789; Lashley, 2001, p. 343) Conclusion It is important that the management of the motel take into consideration the importance of marketing strategies that will take the motel to the higher levels. The location of the motel is vital in the determination of the future of the motel as well upgrading it to focus on other targets of the market. I n addition, human resource management should be careful in ensuring that they hire the most competent workers who will upgrade the level of the services offered. This also includes the empowerment of the workers, to raise their commitment while discharging of their duties. References Barsky, J., Nash, L. (2002). How to Weed - and Edit - and Work - Effectively
How to Weed - and Edit - and Work - Effectively In my newsletter last week, I wrote about weeding. The letter did not go out until Friday- a notoriously bad day to send out a newsletter- so I am expanding on the theme in a full-out blog. Weeding is an art. We all know that if you donââ¬â¢t weed out the roots of a plant, the plant will grow back. There are many metaphors for this phenomenon. But thatââ¬â¢s not what Iââ¬â¢m going to talk about today. Iââ¬â¢m reflecting instead on the process of weeding. When I go into my garden to weed, I find Iââ¬â¢m more effective if I choose the type of weed Iââ¬â¢m going to pull: ââ¬Å"Today Iââ¬â¢m going to pull out all the grass in my garden.â⬠ââ¬Å"Today Iââ¬â¢m going to pull out all the lemon balm.â⬠When my eyes and brain are looking for one particular thing, I have a much easier time spotting it than if I were to say ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to weed all types of weeds todayâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to pick tomatoes and weed as I do it.â⬠Sometimes it can also work to weed a small area of everything that is NOT the lettuce, or the tomato, or the garlic. Again, my brain is focused on one thing, in one small space. When Iââ¬â¢m unfocused, I miss a lot of things. Even the thought of weeding my entire garden of everything I donââ¬â¢t want there raises my heart rate and sends me into overwhelm. Its simply too much to do, especially when I have so many other tasks pulling for my attention! I need to take one thing at a time. Weeding is like editing. Like my experience of weeding, if I limit myself to one thing I do a better job. Looking through a document to check for periods at the end of each bullet, or to check for extra spaces, means Iââ¬â¢m likely to catch the one thing Iââ¬â¢m looking for. Did I overuse the word ââ¬Å"thatâ⬠? Or ââ¬Å"justâ⬠? Or ââ¬Å"reallyâ⬠? It works best to search on each of those words one at a time. Conversely, if I try to find every error, Iââ¬â¢ll probably miss a bunch of them. [For a list of common errors to look for, see The Write Lifeââ¬â¢s 25 Editing Tips for Tightening Your Copy] Despite knowing the downsides of overcommitment in proofreading, my brain often wants to do everything at once and fix everything at once. It takes some wrangling to get myself to concentrate on one thing at a time, especially in this age of distraction. In fact, as I sat down to write this blog I went to do some research on multitasking and ended up doing something else before getting to my Google search. Then my phone rang and I took the call before finally getting back to my article. Have I lost your attention yet? Perhaps I have. I am talking about multitasking, and I have taken you along for the rideâ⬠¦ and we all know by now that our brains are not wired for multitasking! Hereââ¬â¢s a great article, Multitasking is Killing Your Brain, that describes how multitasking lowers your work quality and productivity, harms your IQ (possibly permanently), increases stress levels, and simply exhausts you. Weeding can be an antidote to multitasking. There is practice to be had in concentrating on one thing at a time, and we could all stand to do a lot more of it. Itââ¬â¢s time for me to get out into my garden.

Threats and Challenges of Walmart Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Threats and Challenges of Walmart - Essay Example When Mike Duke took over as Chief Executive Officer in 2009, he faced more challenges from the inside and the outside. In 2009, Lee Scott announced his retirement from the company he had reined for years. During Leeââ¬â¢s stint, he overcame internal and external foes by transforming the company and dragged it ââ¬Å"into the 21st century from its clannish rootsâ⬠(Kapner, 2009). Under Mike Duke, Wal-Mart has a new strategy of doing business with the public and with its suppliers: it wants to sell and deliver environmentally friendly products and serve the public with the least environmental impact that it could have and do. Moreover, Wal-Mart wants to transport the products from suppliers so that it could cut costs and save more for its stores (Burritt, et al., 2010). Vice-president for corporate transportation, Kelly Abney, says that with lower costs they would have increased sales. The strategy is to take over transportation service from companies that produce the goods ââ¬â Wal-Mart believes it could do it more efficiently while allowing the companies just to produce the goods for them. In this sense, manufacturers would pay Wal-Mart for the transportation through lower wholesale prices. More savings means more sales for Wal-Mart and low prices for the customers. Wal-Mart had done this before and saved $200 million by packing and scheduling efficiently its fleet of trucks (Burritt, et al., 2010). With the new strategy, Wal-Mart can use contractors and its own vehicles in picking up products directly from manufacturersââ¬â¢ facilities. Wal-Mart can save more time in delivery with this new strategy. The problem in this new strategy is the economies of scale that it will create. According to Randy Huffman, a former Wal-Mart executive, the move will have an adverse reaction on other manufacturers, but this will be beneficial on the part of the customers.

Critical approaches to humanities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Critical approaches to humanities - Essay Example Hence, it is important for people to understand the concepts which are vital in the study of literature. Most of the literature is abundant with the conceptions about gender, race, discrimination, political conditions and social disruptions. Understanding of the biases that may exist due to a writerââ¬â¢s background or gender are hence important to visualize the true context of the issues discussed. This paper aims to analyze the importance that gender understanding carries in the study of literature. Gender is a socially constructed phenomenon that has a strong impact on our perception about ourselves. In the gendered society that we live in, when a person starts writing or reading he does so as a gendered individual. Every individual in this gendered society visualizes the whole group of his relative gender while going through a piece of literature. We may say that the bonds of this gendered society are very complex and strong that it becomes difficult to resist them. All the efforts to avoid the gender stereotyping go in vain. However, the gender roles that were previously defined to expose menââ¬â¢s power and strong status and womenââ¬â¢s love, affection and dependence are no longer applicable. Individuals are taught about their limitations and values according to their gender. Literature plays an important role in teaching these values. However, it is important to completely understand what gender is and how gender roles evolved with time. The literature of 16th century portrays an extremely different scenario than the literature of 18th century. The 16ht century literature was more associated with menââ¬â¢s power, abilities and aims often denoted by the renaissance spirit, whereas, the 18th century literature is more inclined towards the fallacies of the society of that period. Women were considered as creatures that spent most of their time on useless things. The materialistic approach of women of that time was

Secularization Essay -- Essays Papers Religion Society Worldly
Secularization The word secularization is derived from the Latin word saeculum(world) it was first used to refer the transfer of property from the church to the civil princes. Now it denotes the process by which religion loses some or all of its power, dominance and authority. Secularization as a concept refers to the actual historical process whereby this dualist system ââ¬Å" this world'; and the sacramental structures of mediation between this world and the other world progressively breakdown until the entire medieval systems of classification disappear, to be replaced by new systems of spatial structuration of the spheres. The structured division of 'this world'; into two separate spheres, 'the religious'; and 'the secular'; has to be distinguished and kept separate. From now on, there will be only one single 'this world';, the secular one, within which religion will have to find its own place. If before, it was the religious realm which appeared to be the all-encompassing reality within which the secular realm found its proper place, now the secular sphere will be the all-encompassing within which religious sphere will have to adapt. There are several conceptions of secularization. 1. Decline of religion 2. Differentiation of institution, practices and activities from religion 3. Transposition of norms from religion to the world 4. Desacralization of the world 5. Conformity of religion to the world There are also causes of secularization 1. Industrializa...

Global warming: Natural or human- induced Essay
Scientists and environmentalists have defined the term global warming in different ways Global warming refers to the heating of the surface, which leads to climate change and rising sea levels; this is mainly due to emission of gases (www. planningportal. gov. uk/). Others attribute global warming to the consequences of the green house effects. It is also believed that global warming occurs when temperatures of the earth surface increase due to rise of carbon dioxide causing climatic changes hence global warming. Global warming has in the recent past become a subject of interest among scientists environmentalists and governments among other groups. This is due to the far reaching effects especially the climate change. The question that now begs an answer is whether global warming occurs naturally or it is due to human activities. There has been an increase in global temperature since mid 20th century, There are scientists who hold that global warming is caused by human activities like the emission of gases such as carbon to the atmosphere, burning of fossil fuels, deforestations and similar activities (Job D. A. 1994). Human activities have been cited as the causes of global warming by environmentalists, who urge for discontinuation of the said activities. Green house gases are highly cited to cause the rise in the temperature of the earth. This is mainly due to anthropogenic GHGs. However; this argument is discredited because rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and green house gases GHGs does not correlate with global warming. Some scientists argue that if the green house gases were causing climate changes through temperature rise, then the troposphere would warm faster than the earth surface and this according to them is not observable. Temperature measurement indicate that temperatures increase with the rate of the temperature surface. Temperatures have risen and fallen due to the change in the levels of carbon dioxide in a time span of after 1000 years (Net T. 1999). It is uncertain to attribute global warming to the humans. Global warming is due to the effects of natural occurrence such as ocean currents and when the solar system increases its solar activities. Ocean currents are the movements of ocean water in a continuous way, Ocean currents within the ocean of hot or cold rivers. Forces generate currents which acts upon water causing planet rotation, wind affects the temperatures, this leads to differences in the moon gravitation. Ocean currents may flow for long distances even thousands of kilometers. They determine the climates in areas surrounding the oceans. Some examples are the Hawaiian Islands where the climate of the area is cool than the tropical latitudes. Deep ocean currents are driven by destiny and temperature gradient. Global warming is mostly believed to be caused by human activities. Some researchers have tried to examine patterns of heat in the temperature warming over land and water in both warm and cold areas. Results revealed some specific patterns regarding the green house gases. Vertical structure of warming was graphically different from natural warming structure. (Santer, B. D et al) According to Thomson, J. (1995), a signal analyst, the accumulation of green house gases had overwhelmed the relatively weaker effects of solar cycle on the climate. He had also noted that seasonââ¬â¢s timings kept on changing due to emissions of carbons dioxide after the World War II during the industrialization process. The seasonal pattern had started to change at a very high rate. (ââ¬Å"The seasons global temperature and precessionâ⬠by David J Thomson science vol 268 1995) Research done has continued to strengthen the case for human induced global warming. The national climate date center found that winterââ¬âtime and night ââ¬âtime low temperatures were rising twice than summer time and daytime high temperature. Researchers argued that if the warming occurs naturally high and low temperatures would rise and fall in a parallel manner rather than the observed temperature range which narrows between daytime highs and nighttime lows. (David, E. et al 1997) There is relation between temperature changes and factors like volcanic activities and sunââ¬â¢s brightness variations. Abrupt warning had occurred during the 20th century. Most of the climatic analysis on climatic change has suggested that human interventions have been a dominant force behind global warming. Others studies have shown that natural factors had also influenced the change of earths temperature. There has been an increase in carbon dioxide and methane amount in space migrating from the earth atmosphere. These changes occurred between 1970 and 1997. Human generated carbon dioxide from green house had caused the earth to import heat causing climate change. Many researchers in their studies and analysis of global warming acknowledge that human has induced increase of the earthââ¬â¢s temperature. Gas emissions from industries, deforestation, burning fuels causes rise of the earth temperature. Global warming and climate change is attributed to various factors natural and human induced. Natural factors within the earthââ¬â¢s climate system have brought few changes. Changes earths orbiting around the sun can bring a large change on the earthââ¬â¢s climate system. However climate change have been altered in a significant variations, this makes it difficult to explain changes in climate as seen since the 20th century as occurring due to natural processes.
